The great holiday of Pioneer Day is upon us and, whether you’re celebrating the fact that “this is the place” or tearing it up on “Pie ‘n Beer Day,” this is an exciting weekend to be in Utah. Keep reading for a very thorough list of things to do in Ogden, Provo and SLC for the Days of ’47.
The City Down South (sorry, I’m a Utah fan) is taking the 24th to a whole new level with its Pioneer Day Extravaganza. Festivities are FREE at North Park starting at 10 a.m. going all the way to the late, late hour of 2 p.m., but live music, fun activities, a Farmer’s Market and delicious fresh pie should be enough to lure you in.
O-town has jam-packed this entire week with fun and excitement. Wednesday, the 23rd at noon the Eccles Conference Center features the Miss Rodeo Utah Fashion Show (sexy!!!) and Silent Auction (shhhh!), while the PRCA Rodeo kicks off with Mutton Bustin’ at 6:30 p.m. at Ogden Pioneer Stadium. It's the time-tested battle between kids and sheep. The 24th is ushered in on Thursday morning at 9 with the Grand Parade down Washington Blvd., which is always a good place to score some free Utah Vitamin Chews, saltwater taffy. Then, the final installment of the PRCA Rodeo begins again with more Mutton Bustin’ at 6:30 p.m., followed by the coronation of Miss Rodeo Utah and, or course, a huge fireworks show.
Salt Lake City:
Downtown "is the place” for you this Pioneer Day weekend. Leave the burbs and head to the capital city. If you’re an early riser the Tabernacle has a sunrise service at 7 featuring music and Days of ’47 Royalty presentation. Since you're up anyway, head to State St. at 9 a.m. for the HUGE parade. X96 will be there, floating on a float. After that you've got the Days of ’47 Rodeo at Energy Solutions Arena at 7 p.m. or hang out with Jon Smith at Trolley Square at 7 for swag, the best viewing for fireworks and some tunes. The rodeo is also happening on Friday and Saturday - choose wisely. Whatever you do, have fun, be safe and be thankful there’s no Mormon Cricket Armageddon.
Keep it safe. Keep a bucket or water, and get a ride home if you imbibe too much. Here are some suggstions for a ride option is you need one.
