Kid Rock Testifies In Court Over Alleged Autograph Scuffle

Kid Rock is dealing with another scuffle, this one dating back to 2006.  E! Online says the musician was in court Friday to answer to charges that he attacked three autograph seekers outside Los Angeles’ Roosevelt Hotel.  Michael Medlin, Jose Perez, and Carlos Bonilla brought a lawsuit against Rock over an incident in which he and members of The Boo-Yaa Tribe allegedly attacked them.  Rock denied the attack and stated that he was defending himself in a “chaotic” scene.  He also testified that claims he provoked and challenged them by asking “Who wants a piece of me next?” were ridiculous, insisting, quote, “I wouldn’t say something corny like that.”  Rock added, quote, “It was kind of chaotic.  There were cameras everywhere and people yelling.”  The men are seeking 15-million dollars in damages.

Beastie Boys Aim For Fall Release

The Beastie Boys are hoping to have “Hot Sauce Committee, Pt. 1” in stores in September, one year later than it was initially supposed to arrive.  The disc was delayed after rapper Adam “MCA” Yauch was diagnosed with a cancerous salivary gland tumor last July.  But after treatment Yauch says he’s starting to feel better.  He tells EW.com, quote, “It was touch and go there for a while, but I am finally getting my energy back.”  Yauch notes the goal now is to have their music ready for a fall release.  He admits it still depends on his health, and they still have to, quote, “play it by ear.”  Yauch says the group will revisit the album shortly to make sure they are still happy with the material and determine if they want to make additions or changes.

Tom Delonge Sees Modlife As New Business Model For Music

The music industry is rapidly changing and Angels & Airwaves frontman Tom DeLonge feels he’s ahead of the game with the Modlife online service.  The vocalist tells AlternativeAddiction.com, quote, “I kind of look at TV, if people watch a show on NBC they basically are watching for free, but there is a whole business model around it with merchandising and advertising.  I see music the same way, give the people the music for free and let the platform surrounding it generate the revenue.”  As such, the group recently released their “LOVE” album digitally for free.
DeLonge says that he expects the music will draw fans to the Modlife service, which offers concerts, downloadable movies, and interaction with the band in return for a fee.  He adds, quote, “What it boils down to is there are all these different options to make money off of and get millions of copies out to the public by offering the music for free.”  DeLonge says that by launching Modlife, they are trying to put things in motion for what may be the new way things are done in the industry.

Flaming Lips Frontman Working On New Movie

Flaming Lips singer Wayne Coyne has the filmmaking bug again, but his experiences in putting together the movie “Christmas On Mars” are influencing his approach this time around.  Coyne tells Billboard.com that one of the reasons it took the better part of a decade to complete the film was having to reconstruct sets every time he shot a scene.  The vocalist says that won’t be a problem with his next cinematic project, noting, quote, “This one is set in someone’s house and in a backyard and in a slaughterhouse.  All those are available to me right here, so I don’t have to build everything this time.”
Coyne says he plans to employ his bandmates and friends in Oklahoma City to appear in the movie and may reach out to some celebrity pals as well.  He shares, quote, “I’m in the process of begging Justin Timberlake to be part of it.  If I’m lucky I’ll be able to wear him down in another year.”  Coyne adds that he and bandmate Steven Drodz have started working on music for the film, and like his past movie efforts they will work on it as time permits.

Portishead, Goldfrapp Members Bring Sounds To A Silent

Portishead’s Adrian Utley and Goldfrapp’s Will Gregory are taking on an unusual collaboration.  The two musicians have teamed up to provide a soundtrack to the 1928 silent film “The Passion Of Joan Of Arc.”  The movie, complete with the backing soundtrack, debuts in May in England at Bristol’s Colston Hall, and there are plans to take the production on the road.  Utley tells BBC’s 6Music, quote, “We would like to play it places that are not always associated with silent film or film and possibly do it at some festivals.  We’d like to introduce it into a world where I’m sure people would really enjoy it.”  Gregory adds that they researched over 20 films before deciding on the classic.

Dave Grohl Moved By “Anvil”

Dave Grohl is fresh off a presenting stint at the Independent Spirit Awards over the weekend.  The vocalist was asked to introduce Best Documentary winners Anvil as they performed for the audience.  Grohl tells BBC’s 6Music that he was proud to be asked and is a huge fan of “Anvil! The Story Of Anvil.”  He notes, quote, “I cried like 15 times.  I was touched by that movie so profoundly as a musician.”  The rocker explains, quote, “I was weeping not because it’s sad or depressing but because it’s so inspiring.  There is nothing that’s going to stop these guys from playing together.  They’ve got so much passion and dedication and as people, you couldn’t meet nicer people.”
Grohl adds that he can certainly identify with the members of Anvil, noting, quote, “I grew up in suburban Virginia.  I’m a high school drop-out, I worked in a furniture warehouse, I played in a punk rock band.  There were never any career aspirations.”  Grohl says that when he was starting out he played music for the love of it and didn’t care about commercial viability, and much like the guys in Anvil he would leave for a tour and hope there was a job to come home to after the performances ended.  The singer concludes, quote, “All musicians should see this movie, whether you like their music or not.”

Radiohead Denying Reported CD Details

Radiohead is developing a new album, but an e-mail circulating amongst fans about details of the disc is apparently fake.  The music website Tinymixtapes.com reported on an e-mail that allegedly came from the band’s “W.A.S.T.E.” website stating that the group’s new album would be titled “Tehrangeles.”  While the report did state it was unsubstantiated, it also revealed an eleven-song track listing that included such legit titles as “The Daily Mail,” “Give Up The Ghost,” and “Supercollider.”  However, a spokesperson for the band confirms that the album details, including the CD’s name and the specific songs, are not official.  Radiohead returned to the studio in January to continue working on the project.  The band’s new album will be their follow up to 2007’s “In Rainbows.”

Alice In Chains Drummer Happy With “Your Decision” Video

The video for Alice In Chains’ “Your Decision” is getting a strong endorsement.  Drummer Sean Kinney says he thinks the clip turned out fairly well.
      {AliceInChainsVideos2}      Q…wanted it to.      :21.3
Kinney admits he doesn’t really like videos.  He explains that he’s a musician, not an actor, and he finds making a video to be a bizarre and unnatural experience he’d avoid if he could.  “Your Decision” is the latest single from Alice In Chains’ 2009 CD “Black Gives Way To Blue.”  The clip for the song also generated a contest, in which fans continued the storyline with five additional chapters.  The winning chapters have been turned into a comic book.  The grand prize winner will be in New York City to meet the band and catch their concert at Terminal 5 Tuesday night.

Slash Takes Control

Slash is ready to be the host instead of the guest.  The guitarist tells Billboard.com after years of being asked to help out on other people’s albums, he wanted to do something on his own.  He says, quote, “I just wanted to get different people I admired and thought were great on my record.  I’d been doing that on other people’s records forever.”  Avenged Sevenfold vocalist M. Shadows is one of the guests and the singer adds, quote, “You can tell he’s doing the record as a way to try different things.  He definitely branched out, and the result is all over the place.  But the guitar playing is so obviously Slash.  That holds it all together.”  Slash says he had no preconceived idea of who he wanted on the album, and notes he waited until he had some music ideas before approaching his potential guests.  The cameo-filled collection, titled “Slash,” is due April 6th.

Radiohead Bassist Remembers Sparklehorse Leader

The death of Sparklehorse leader Mark Linkous is bringing out musicians inspired by his work.  Radiohead bassist Colin Greenwood tells Gigwise.com he was sad to learn of the vocalist’s passing.  He notes Radiohead toured with Sparklehorse back in the ‘90s, recalling, quote, “They were great every night.  His first two records were very important to me, and I carried his music from the tour into my life and my friends’ lives too.”  The bassist adds, quote, “He was softly spoken, with an Old South courtesy I hadn’t heard before.  He introduced me to Daniel Johnston’s music and the West Virginian writing of Pinckney Benedict.  Mark wrote and played some beautiful music and we’re lucky to have it.  Rest in peace.”  Linkous died over the weekend.  His family has confirmed that he took his own life last Saturday.

Muse Building A North American Audience

Muse’s slow build is paying off in a major way.  The UK rockers are moving into larger venues and holding their own, which is more than many of their overseas peers can say.  Singer Matt Bellamy tells Canada’s QMI Agency, quote, “We seem to be bucking the trend by selling tickets everywhere.  Our American manager was very impressed by the fact we’re playing to 12-thousand people in Detroit, which is obviously an area very badly hit by the economic downturn.”  The vocalist says after years of downsizing their show in America, they are happy to bring the theatrics that European audiences get.  Muse’s current production includes three miniature skyscrapers and videos specifically tailored to the songs in the set.  The band will be entertaining their Detroit fans at the Palace of Auburn Hills this Saturday.  Muse is performing in Toronto on Monday.

“Regis And Kelly” To Welcome Bret Michaels This Week

Bret Michaels is on the small screen this week.  The Poison frontman is stopping by “Live! with Regis And Kelly,” and he has a number of things to discuss.  The rocker-turned-reality star recently released the single “Nothing To Lose,” which he recorded with teen star Miley Cyrus.  The track is now available from iTunes.  Michaels is also among the stars taking part in the new season of NBC’s “The Celebrity Apprentice.”  The 46-year-old will try to impress mogul Donald Trump alongside fellow notables like Sharon Osbourne, Cyndi Lauper, and baseball player Darryl Strawberry.  Michaels will appear on the syndicated “Live! With Regis And Kelly” on Wednesday.  “The Celebrity Apprentice” will return to NBC on Sunday, March 14th at 9:00 p.m. Eastern time.

Anvil Documentary Takes A Spirit Award

“Anvil! The Story of Anvil” has scored another award.  The rock film captured the nod for Best Documentary at the Independent Spirit Award.  The film’s director Sacha Gervasi accepted the trophy for his work on the film, which chronicles the Canadian rockers’ struggles decades into their career as a group.  Gervasi said, quote, “When I was 15 years old, this band took me out on the road and they showed me a lot of things, some of which I can’t discuss on live television.”  Anvil was also on hand for the ceremony.  The group performed twice during the live broadcast, which aired on cable’s IFC network.
It’s not the first honor for “Anvil! The Story of Anvil.”  The film also won the Best Documentary at the Austin Film Critics Awards, and captured Best International Documentary at the Calgary International Film Festival.

Shins’ Mercer, Danger Mouse Find Harmony With Broken Bells

The Shins’ James Mercer and Danger Mouse may not be an obvious collaboration, but they’re happy with their results as Broken Bells.  Danger Mouse tells ChartAttack.com that the album came together naturally.  He explains, quote, “We didn’t go into the studio thinking, ‘We’re going to make this kind of record.’  It was definitely more of us just going around and seeing what felt right.  We went in without any songs, we just went in, discussed and within an hour or so we had the skeleton of our first song.”  The producer says that thanks to the rapid pace of creating their first track, it helped everyone relax and the experience was an enjoyable one.  Broken Bells self-titled debut is due March 9th.

Hellyeah Continue To Rock

Hellyeah is working toward a new album and it may have some new flavor to it.  Drummer Vinnie Paul tells Revolver TV, quote, “It picks up where the last record left off.  It’s a little more Southern, a little more rock and roll.  It’s got some very, very metal moments on it, too.”  He adds, quote, “It’s just a wide variety of all the different kind of influences that all of us grew up on and I’m really proud of it.”  Paul says the band is three-quarters of the way through the disc, and still expects to have it ready to hit stores on June 1st.  The still-untitled effort will be Hellyeah’s follow up to their 2007 self-titled debut.

Rob Zombie Happy With Label Change

For the first time in years, Rob Zombie is a new artist on a new label.  The vocalist joined Roadrunner’s Loud & Proud after nearly two decades with Geffen Records.  The singer tells Noisecreep.com, quote, “It reminds me of the early days of Geffen.  Because in the early days, Geffen was a very hands-on label.  Every time you went to a city, there was a label rep and knew everyone’s names, and everybody was your friend and if you had a Christmas party, they’d come.”
Zombie says he likes the approach of his new label, explaining, “It’s not just about trying to get some big monster single and not work.  Because rock music’s different than pop music.  You can have a big pop song and put it in a TV commercial, but that’s not what we do.”  He adds, quote, “I think for some people, rock bands became too much work.  But rock bands are the things that survive.  Pop [acts] do not sell out arena when the guys are in their 60s like rock bands do, and are forgotten six months later.”  Zombie’s first release with Roadrunner is his “Hellbilly Deluxe 2.”

OK Go Share Challenges Of New Video

OK Go admits the second video for their song “This Too Shall Pass” was a fun but infuriating clip to put together.  Bassist Tim Nordwind tells Gigwise.com that the “Mousetrap-esque” clip had 60 takes over two days, and only three times did it go off without a hitch.  Nordwind says, quote, “The frustrating part would be getting half way through and then something doesn’t trigger.  And because the setup time took so long once you got about halfway through you started to get really excited because you think, ‘Oh my God, this thing is working,’ and then the paint can doesn’t get triggered to knock off the red trash can.”  OK Go created the Rube Goldberg machine with the help of Synn Labs.  The video for “This Too Shall Pass” is posted online at OKGo.net.  The song is on OK Go’s latest CD, “Of the Blue Colour of the Sky.”

Evanescence’s Lee Finds A “Science” To Songwriting

Evanescence is on their way back.  Singer Amy Lee credits producer-songwriter Will “Science” Hunt with putting her on the right path to a new record.  Science—not to be confused with Evanescence drummer Will Hunt—had worked with Lee on her version of “Sally’s Song” for “The Nightmare Before Christmas” soundtrack.  She tells Spin.com, quote, “We thought, ‘Why don’t we just try writing an original song?’  He has a studio in Fort Worth, Texas and we spent two days down there writing and a new song came out that was so different.  It was dark and inspiring.  It was a groove that I hadn’t found in a long time.”  Lee says one song turned into more and the next thing she knew her sessions with Science became the start of an Evanescence album.
Lee notes the project is turning into a “rainbow of sounds,” and adds, quote, “The songwriting and sound is inspired by a lot of our mutual loves—Bjork, Nine Inch Nails, and music with a lot of programming and sounds that feel larger than life.”  Evanescence is currently working on the follow up to their 2006 effort “The Open Door.”

Sparklehorse Leader Passes

Sparklehorse leader Mark Linkous has died at his own hands.  “Rolling Stone” reports that his family confirmed Linkous’ March 6th suicide, stating, quote, “We are thankful for his time with us and will hold him forever in our hearts.  May his journey be peaceful, happy and free.  There’s a heaven and there’s a start for you.”  Linkous was briefly pronounced dead in 1996 after ingesting a mix of Valium and antidepressants, but he recovered crippled from the incident.  He continued to record music over the years, and most recently teamed with Danger Mouse and David Lynch on the “Dark Night Of The Soul” album.  The disc was shelved last year due to legalities, but last week it was revealed that Danger Mouse and EMI had worked out the issues and the CD would finally arrive later this year.  Linkous had reportedly been wrapping up a new album at the time of his death.

Belle and Sebastian return after 4 years

Belle And Sebastian are ready to get back to work.  The melodic Glaswegians are preparing to hit the studio to record the follow-up to 2006’s “The Life Pursuit.”  The group informed fans of their plans via an email last week, explaining that they were flying to Los Angeles to record the disc.  Belle And Sebastian have also booked a handful of dates in Finland, Norway, and Japan this summer.

Limited addition Soundgarden vinyl

Soundgarden is digging into the vaults to do something special for Record Store Day.  This year’s event takes place April 17th and participating retailers will stock a limited edition orange vinyl seven-inch re-issue of the band’s SubPop debut single, “Hunted Down.”  The track is backed with the song “Nothing To Say.”  For a list of participating stores, visit http://www.recordstoreday.com/Venues.

My Chemical Romance Splits With Drummer

My Chemical Romance is making the difficult decision to move forward without drummer Bob Bryar.  Guitarist Frank Iero says on his blog, quote, “As of four weeks ago, My Chemical Romance and Bob Bryar parted ways.  This was a painful decision for all of us to make and was not taken lightly.  We wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors and expect you all to do the same.”  Bryar moved up from drum tech to become their full-time drummer in mid-2004 following the departure of founding member Matt Pelissier.
But My Chemical Romance intends to weather the lineup change.  Iero also notes that the band has been writing some powerful new tracks and that they’ve entered the studio again.  He adds, quote, “What has been ending up on tape each night is some of the most exciting and honest work we have ever created.”  My Chemical Romance is working on the follow up to their 2006 album “The Black Parade,” the only album from the group to feature Bryar.

LCD Soundsystem Considering An End

LCD Soundsystem is ramping up to a new album, but there’s a chance the band’s third release may be their finale.  Leader James Murphy tells RollingStone.com, quote, “I feel like this should be the last record because a lot of people make three good records and then they don’t make good records anymore.  And if we get any bigger than we are, I would lose some interest.”  The musician adds, quote, “I feel like I made a band that was about how I felt about music, as an argument, and I feel like I’ve kind of explained myself and it’s time to do something else.”  Murphy is currently finishing the latest record, and the still-untitled set is expected May 18th.

Iron Maiden Announces LP, Tour With Dream Theater

Iron Maiden has a new album on the way.  Blabbermouth.net says the band’s new studio effort, “The Final Frontier,” is on track for a summer release.  In addition, the group is planning to North American tour in support of the disc.  Iron Maiden has tapped Dream Theater to join them on the road trip.  Regarding the pairing, Dream Theater’s Mike Portnoy says, quote, “Through the years, we’ve done many one-off shows with Maiden and they’ve almost all been overseas.  It is very exciting to finally be doing a full tour with them and on our side of the pond, no less.”  “The Frontier Tour” will launch at Superpages.com Center in Dallas, Texas on June 9th.

The Go-Go’s, The Bangles, and Suzanne Vega are among the latest performers to sign on for the upcoming Lilith Fair tour.  Other artists to join the lineup to this summer’s traveling festival include Anya Marina, Kelly Clarkson, Miranda Lee Richards, Courtyard Hounds, and Martina McBride.  They’re adding to a bill that also includes Sheryl Crow, Metric, Tegan & Sara, Beth Orton, Cat Power, and The Gossip; as well as Heart, Sugarland, Grace Potter & The Nocturnals, LaRoux, Lights, Meaghan Smith, The Submarines, and Lilith Fair founder Sarah McLachlan, among others.  Dates and venues for the tour, which is making a comeback after an eleven-year hiatus, will be announced shortly.

Mudvayne’s “Beautiful” Video Banned

Mudvayne has a new video that many may not see.  It’s been banned from most networks due to its graphic content.  Singer Chad Gray tells Noisecreep.com that the clip is actually the second portion of a three-part series.  One of the more intriguing images in the clip is of a girl’s lips being sewn shut, which Gray says was not a simulated act.  He says director Frankie Nasso was at a party with the band’s production manager, and they witnessed it firsthand.  Gray notes, quote, “After they got over the shock, they decided that she had to have a place in the video.”  The clip depicts a man emerging from a grave to share relations with a female corpse as she’s brought back to life.
Gray admits the ban might not be all that bad for the band.  He says, quote, “I believe that there is as much, if not more, value to the interest created by a banned video as there is in promoting it through traditional channels.”  The only place currently airing the clip is Vampirefreaks.com.  Gray says it’s already reached 400-thousand views on the networking website.

OK Go Discuss Video Issue

OK Go is finding it more difficult to get their videos to fans.  Singer Damian Kulash says their label is behind the restrictions, and it’s all about money.  But he notes that blocking OK Go’s video output doesn’t make much sense to them, given how videos have brought the group added attention.
OK Go’s breakthrough was fueled with the eye catching, GRAMMY winning video to the 2006 hit “Here It Goes Again.”  The clip features band members performing an elaborately choreographed routine on treadmills.  Despite the video dispute with their label, OK Go continues to make clips for their songs.  The group just released their latest video this week, for the song “This Too Shall Pass.”  The clip is posted online at OKGo.net.  The song is on OK Go’s latest CD, “Of the Blue Colour of the Sky.”

New Tonic, Deftones CDs Due In May

Tonic and Deftones will be issuing new albums this spring.  Tonic’s self-titled effort is the first set of new studio material from the band in eight years.  Their last CD was 2002’s “Head On Straight.”  “Tonic” is slated to hit stores May 4th.  Deftones have “Diamond Eyes” on the way.  The album is their first studio effort with bassist Sergio Vega.  Vega joined the fold last year, filling in for Chi Cheng.  Cheng has been hospitalized since a November 2008 car accident that has left him in a semi-comatose state.  Deftone’s “Diamond Eyes,” the band’s follow up to 2006’s “Saturday Night Wrist,” is due May 18th.

Alter Bridge Back In Action

After taking a detour in 2009, Alter Bridge is back together and recording a new album.  The band says in a posting that both Scott Phillips’ drum tracks and Brian Marshall’s bass work is complete for their next album, and Mark Tremonti and Myles Kennedy began to lay down the guitar parts this week.  In their posting, they state, quote, “The four of us are creating these songs exactly the way we want with absolute freedom.  And only the best of the best of the 17 songs we record will make the album.”  Meanwhile, Alter Bridge has confirmed that Kennedy will front Slash’s band when the guitar great tours this summer.  Not only will they be playing songs from Slash’s solo album and his GNR past, but they will also work in some of Kennedy’s solo tracks as well as some Alter Bridge numbers.  The touring should fit perfectly with the lead time heading into Alter Bridge’s album.

Hockey Comes “Away” With Jerry Harrison-Produced Track

As Hockey builds a name with their debut album, “Mind Chaos,” frontman Ben Grubin notes that some of the tracks on the disc are from different stages in the group’s development.  He says their latest single, “Song Away,” is from an early session with producer Jerry Harrison.  The singer explains that while they didn’t keep Harrison at the helm for the entire project, it wasn’t because they didn’t appreciate working with the ex-Talking Heads member.
Over time, Hockey evolved into a four-piece band that features Grubin with guitarist Brian White, bassist Jeremy Reynolds, and drummer Anthony Stassi.  Grubin notes that while “Song Away” sounds different from their later material they kept it because they still liked the track.

Nickelback, Tragically Hip, Metric Take Juno Nominations

ickelback, The Tragically Hip, and Metric are among the rock nominees for Canada’s upcoming Juno Awards.  Nickelback has two bids.  The group is vying for the Juno Fan Choice Award, while their CD “Dark Horse” is up for Rock Album of the Year.  Others in the Album category includes Alexisonfire’s “Old Crows/Young Cardinals,” Three Days Grace’s “Life Starts Now,” and The Tragically Hip’s “We Are The Same”—which is one of three nominations for that band.  The Tragically Hip is also
a contender for Group of the Year, while their song “Love is a First” is up for Single of the Year.  Metric is also vying for Group of the Year, and the band’s CD “Fantasies” joins Tegan & Sara’s “Sainthood” in the Alternative Album of the Year category.
Kings Of Leon, a big winner on this side of the border at January’s GRAMMY Awards, is among those seeking International Album of the Year recognition with their set “Only By The Night.”  Metric is among the first confirmed performers for the event.  The 2010 Juno Awards, Canada’s equivalent to the GRAMMYs, will be presented in ceremonies in St John’s, Newfoundland on April 17th and 18th.

Dave Navarro Wearing Tattoos—And nothing Else—For PETA

Jane’s Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro is baring all—almost—for a new PETA campaign.  The musician is taking part in the “Ink, Not Mink” ads, and showcasing his tattoos.  Navarro says in a PETA interview, quote, “There was a time in my life where I would wear over-the-top outfits, and some of those outfits contained fur.  Then several years ago, I saw video footage of animals being skinned alive and screaming, and it honestly is the most horrific, inhumane thing I’ve ever seen—a dying, twitching, skinless animal in such terrified shock crying, screaming blood-curdling screams that are so hard to watch and listen to.”  Navarro joins past celebs Chester Bennington, Carey Hart, Steve-O, and Amaré Stoudemire in taking part in the “Ink, Not Mink” ad campaign.

Alice In Chains Have A Complete Comic Book

Alice In Chains now have a complete comic book, compiled from fan-generated chapters that continue the story from the “Your Decision” video.  The five winning chapters can be viewed as a PDF download at content.velvethammer.net/alice/ydcomic/ydcomic.pdf.  As part of a contest, fans were able to submit ideas that extended the plot—and the debauchery—from the video, and the five most chosen picks were then turned into the comic.  The grand prize winner is also receiving a trip to meet the band and watch their New York performance next Tuesday.

NOFX Bassist Robbed

NOFX bassist Fat Mike is getting past a recent mugging.  The musician says via the band’s website that he was robbed during the group’s tour of South America.  He explains, quote, “If there was ever a good way to get mugged, I found it.  Yeah, no one wants to get robbed, but if you do, I can’t think of a better way.”  He explains that he was in Argentina walking the streets of Buenos Aires early in the morning looking for a bar when he stopped to text a cameraman from the band’s tour.  As he pressed send, a guy on a bike “accidentally” knocked the phone from his hand.  Mike recalls, quote, “He doesn’t stop and my iPhone isn’t on the ground.  I look to my right and there he is, holding my phone.”  He says he then realized, quote, “Wow!  I’ve been robbed!.”
But the rocker adds that he was impressed with the incident, noting that during the robbery there was no violence, no trauma, and no chance he was going to be able to run after the guy and catch him.  Mike says he also lost some money that he had stuffed in the phone case, and admits the phone was full of photos he’s hoping won’t be made public.

Godsmack—And Erna—Back With New Music

Godsmack is back in action this year with a new album on the way, but that’s not all fans can expect from the band’s members.  Frontman Sully Erna also plans to release a solo album this year.  However, he cautions that his own project is a big departure from Godsmack.
Godsmack fans will likely recognize Lisa Guyer.  She’s sung with Erna before, contributing vocals to the song “Hollow, from Godsmack’s CDs “IV.”  Erna’s still-untitled solo disc is expected later this year, while Godsmack’s new album “The Oracle” is due this summer.

Phoenix Share Their “Rock Band” Experience

Phoenix is picking up some extra fans thanks to their inclusion in “Rock Band.”  Earlier this year the band’s songs “1901” and “Lisztomania” were added to the video game.  Singer Thomas Mars says he thinks the games are particularly useful for drummers, which he appreciates given his band’s difficulties in discovering someone qualified to sit behind the kit.
Mars admits he doesn’t believe games like “Rock Band” are good for guitarists.  He says budding guitarists really can’t hone their skills by playing the game, which leaves him concerned that, quote, “what’s gonna happen is you’re gonna have great drummers and bad guitarists in the future.”  However, Mars adds that he and his band mates still appreciate being part of the game—and they even enjoy playing the game.  The Phoenix songs “1901” and “Lisztomania” are available for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii systems.

Pennywise Singers Speak Out

The former and current Pennywise vocalists are discussing the band.  Ex-frontman Jim Lindberg notes that despite his departure last year he’s still attached to the group.  He tells AlternativePress.com, quote, “I still feel like all will be the same for Pennywise.  It was a huge part of my life for 20 years.  Just because ‘Mom’ and ‘Dad’ couldn’t get along and couldn’t reconcile doesn’t mean that I feel like I’m out of it.”  Lindberg admits it was, quote, “definitely a big change.”  He explains that he just had different priorities than the other band members and something had to give.

New Pennywise singer Zoli Teglas says he thinks the transition has gone smoothly, and he felt like he fit in with the other guys immediately.  He explains to AlternativePress.com, quote, “It’s not a stretch for me to get in to be their singer because they’ve always been a socially conscientious band and we come from the same area, too.”  But Teglas admits he and Lindberg have different writing styles, which will be apparent in the new Pennywise music.  However, he adds that he’s not out to change the band’s sound, so he’s been trying to merge Lindberg’s style with his own.  He notes, quote, “It’s cool because it’s been a challenge to write in a different way.  Jim is such a cool and talented guy.  I’m stoked to be learning about how he wrote his music, too.”

Pennywise is currently working on a new album, which will be their first with Teglas, and the group will be hitting the road this spring.  The band will play a few dates in the Western U.S. later this month—starting with a show in San Diego, California on March 17th—before launching a European tour in Belgium in April.  Lindberg, meanwhile, has formed a new band with Good Guys In Black drummer Alan Vega and Everest bassist Davey Latter.  Their still-unnamed group is working on music with FAR’s Shaun Lopez producing.

Mumford & Suns Planning New Album

Mumford & Sons may just be getting their start in the States, but the group has already found success with their debut album “Sigh No More” in England and other parts of the world.  Band members are now starting to come up with ideas for their next album as this final push to break yet another audience continues.  Singer Marcus Mumford tells England’s “XFM,” quote, “We’ve got a few more [songs] that are around the periphery.  We haven’t had much of a chance to get in a rehearsal room and actually play them through so we play them in soundchecks.  We’re hoping to be in the studio this year.  The songs are coming and it feels natural.”
Mumford & Sons have been receiving media attention in recent weeks.  Last month the group made their U.S. network TV premiere on “The Late Show with David Letterman,” and last week they were the musical guest on “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson.”  Mumford & Sons are launching a UK tour tonight with a show in Manchester, England.

Neon Trees Believe In Recording Everything

There is one rule that Neon Trees can’t stress enough—record, record, record!  Bassist Branden Campbell says taping their rehearsals has become a regular practice for the band, and it’s been very helpful.
Campbell says the band’s habit of taping every practice was one thing that really impressed him when he joined Neon Trees.  He recalls that after each session singer Tyler Glenn would take the tape, and return to the group the next day with lyrics to those songs.  Neon Trees will soon show off what they’ve created.  Their debut disc “Habits,” featuring the single “Animal,” drops March 16th.

Apocalyptica Working On Their “7th Symphony”

Apocalyptica is coming off the biggest album of their career, but they hope their seventh release will be a lucky one as well.  The group has named its new disc “7th Symphony” and are eyeing a summer release for the album.  The latest effort features the return of producer Howard Benson as well as direction from Joe Barresi, who has worked with Tool and Queens Of The Stone Age.  While the guest list is still mostly under wraps, the band has confirmed that Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo will make a guest appearance on the disc.  Apocalyptica is putting the final touches on their “7th Symphony,” and they’re getting release details in order.
