Meet The Bands: Bastille

Richie T caught up with Dan and Kyle from Bastille about new music, crashing Woody's honeymoon, and coming back to the U.S. Read a brief overview or listen to the full interview below.

New music?

Very soon, don’t worry. We’re working on it, we’ve got something coming out imminently and then a new album next year, hopefully as early as we can possibly get things finished. As soon as possible in terms of when that can happen, but before the end of this year we are releasing something else. Which may or may not be a mixtape.

Coming back to the U.S.:

We’re in L.A for the week, we’re doing some TV shows here, so we’ve just come. It feels nice, we haven’t been in the U.S all summer, we’ve been in Europe doing festivals. We did 40, about 40 festivals in pretty much every European country you’ve ever heard of. Which was really fun, it’s just nice to be back in the U.S., it’s so hot here!

Next U.S. tour:

We’re really excited about touring. We’re coming back in October/November as well so I’m sure you’ll be sick of us again very soon.

The reign of Bad Blood :

When we put out the first record we had no idea what it was going to do, we’ve kind of been riding it's wave a little bit for a while, so It’s going to be quite strange moving on to the next thing and seeing if It’s any good.

Trying to honeymoon with bandmate Woody:

Woody just got married a couple weeks ago, which felt very grown up. He demanded some time for a honeymoon so we all got a week off, which was wicked.

Richie T: Did you go on the honeymoon with him?

We tried, but his wife was not happy. We all do enough traveling together, the Honey Moon was a chance for us to be alone with our thoughts for once.

Going home:

You hear lots of stories about people who at the end of tour don’t really know how to decompress. You’re so used to your whole day being planned out and scheduled and stuff and suddenly you find yourself back in London at home and you’re friends are at work and you’re like uh, what do I do? How do I feed myself?

"bad_news" from Bastille! Richie T |
08/20/2014 | Filed In: bastille | oblivion | video | dan smith | bad news |

Good news from Bastille! The British band that has skyrocketed to worldwide success in the past year has just released the video for their new single, “bad_news”, which will be available on their Oblivion EP (out for pre-order next week). Dan Smith says they made the song in a matter of days only a few weeks ago and that more new music is on its way as well.

Though “bad_news” is more electronic than expected, it still sounds relatively unworked and casual. Dan ventures into his lower vocal range supported by a slinky bass/synth line, electronic drums, eerie background vocals, and various sound effects that lend atmosphere and depth to the track.

Bastille has always had a flair for the cinematic and macabre in their music, artwork, and especially in their videos. The "bad_news" video is less linear in storyline than their usual, featuring short gif-like clips from old black and white films and cartoons. Sinister images of clown faces, policemen, schoolchildren (and tons more) are spliced in between fuzzy slow-motion footage of Dan walking a dimly lit corridor. Near the end of the video emerges the single’s cover art: road lines (reminiscent of the Bad Blood album cover) overlaid on a low quality image of Dan in the dank hallway.

Watch the video and let us know what your favorite clip is. I’m partial to the rando with the ‘stache creepily eating popcorn at 3:50.

Look forward to new music from Bastille in the coming months, and be certain to see these gents on tour this fall! Tickets for their UCCU Center, Orem show availabile HERE at SmithsTix.com

Todd Nuke 'Em's Top 5 Favorite Songs

Here are my top 5 favorite new (or relatively new) songs that I love at this particular moment. I will now present them in no particular order.

Bastille “Flaws” It’s another great song from the Bad Blood album, and I pretty much love every single song on it. And these guys are coming on November 11th!

Broods “Bridges” Even though it is kind of a mellow song, I like to crank this one up as loud as possible. It must be the pulsating bass.

St. Vincent “Digital Witness” This song is awesome. It is part Talking Heads, part Devo, part Siouxsie and the Banshees, with a little bit of Nine Inch Nails mixed in.

Linkin Park “Until It’s Gone” Their new album The Hunting Party is surprisingly good. Remember when Linkin Park used to play guitars? They have gone back to that, and the result is impressive.

Jack White “Lazaretto” Jack White + bitchin violin solo. Need I say more?

BONUS SIXTH SONG! I almost forgot about this one! Big Data "Dangerous." This video is bloody and violent, so proceed with caution.
