6 New Albums You Need To Hear This Summer

Summer means a lot of good things for music fans here in Salt Lake City. We have the Twilight Concert Series approaching, Vans Warped Tour just around the corner and endless bands announcing that they are coming to OUR city (The Black Keys, The Neighbourhood, Arctic Monkeys, and The Offspring just to name a few). On top of this, there's a lot of good music coming out this summer.

Here's a few of our reccomendations:

1. Lowborn – Anberlin

Single: “Stranger Ways” Release Date: July 22

This will be Anberlin’s FINAL album before they call it quits and disband. Yes, unfortunately the band has announced earlier this year that 2014 will be the last year of Anberlin. If this is news to you, please take all the time you need to let this sink in. Are you okay, now? Don’t despair, because, from the sound of it, this new album is looking to be one of their most dynamic albums to date. The aforementioned song, “Stranger Ways,” is their current single. The track is reminiscent of a few of Anberlin’s more new-wave tunes from albums like Cities or Never Take Friendship Personal (listen to Alexithymia, Heavy Hearted Work of Staggering Genius, or Dance Dance Christa Paffgen to know what we are talking about). Another one of the songs from this album, “Dissenter”, has been leaked online if you want to hear a different tune: a very fast-paced, hard rock driven, dance-mosh song that has singer Stephen Christian screaming the whole time. Very different from “Stranger Ways.” You can check it out here. The album is being released through Tooth & Nail Records. You can pre-order the album through the Tooth & Nail website, through Anberlin, or on Itunes. The album is available for digital download, CD, and Vinyl. If you pre-order the album now, you can get an instant download of another track “Hearing Voices.” You can catch Anberlin on this year’s Vans Warped Tour, August 2nd at the Utah State Fairpark.

2. The Black Market – Rise Against

Single: “I Don’t Want To Be Here Anymore” Release Date: July 15

It has been awhile since we have had new material from Rise Against. Their last album Endgame was in 2011, with a B-sides album in between and very little touring between those two LPs. This new song sounds like a very typical Rise Against song. Which isn’t a bad thing; Rise against knows how to deliver to their fans. Regardless of how the rest of the album will sound, we should all pray (send good vibes, do a dance, or whatever you do) that they are coming to Salt Lake City soon. The new album will be released through Interscope Records. You can preorder the song “I Don’t Want To Be Here Anymore” on Itunes.

3. Clouded – This Wild Life

Single: “History” Release Date: OUT NOW

If you’re looking for some more relaxing, chill music to wind down to this summer, then you should check out This Wild Life. This acoustic duo has a knack for writing very melodic, relaxing, acoustic pop/rock music similar to bands such as City & Colour, Dashboard Confessional, and The Maine. The album has been released through Epitaph Records. You can buy the album now through This Wild Life, or Itunes. It is available in the following formats: Vinyl, CD, and digital download. You can see This Wild Life on Vans Warped Tour, August 2nd at Utah State Fairpark.

4. Blood Stutter EP – Handsome Ghost

Single: “Blood Stutter” Release Date: OUT NOW

This band features electronic beats and textures mixed with acoustic guitar. Handsome Ghost is the kind of band that you would play at the end of a long day of work or after getting back from that weekend camping trip. Or you could play it on your boat as you are out on the lake with your buddies. Regardless of what you use it for, this EP is essential for your summer playlist. This band is for fans of The Postal Service, Iron & Wine, and Broods. The EP has been released through Color Study Records and is available on Itunes.

5. Disgusting – Beartooth

Single: “Keep Your American Dream” Release Date: OUT NOW

Check out the album that Alternative Press is calling “one of the best albums of 2014.” Beartooth front man, Caleb Shomo, was previously the vocalist/synth player of electronic metalcore band Attack Attack! However, the sound of Beartooth is very different from the work of Attack Attack! Beartooth features a more punk driven sound combined with features of metalcore and post-hardcore music similar to bands such as A Day To Remember, Every Time I Die, and Of Mice & Men. The album has been released through Red Bull Records and you can order the album through Beartooth, Red Bull Records, or Itunes. Beartooth will be coming through Utah on the Vans Warped Tour, August 2nd.

6. The Hunting Party – Linkin Park

Single: “Guilty All The Same(feat. Rakim)” Release Date: June 17

You have already heard “Until It’s Gone” a few times here at X96. They have just released a music video for that song. But here is a more dynamic song from The Hunting Party. “Guilty All The Same” brings out the more hard rock/metal roots that Linkin Park started out with. There are a few other songs that bring back that old Linkin Park sound, see “Wastelands” for example. Linkin Park also breaks some new ground by bringing in System Of A down guitarist, Damien, on the track “Rebellion.” As well Tom Morello (former Rage Against The Machine and Audioslave guitarist) for a track titled “Drawbar.” There are some other tracks such as “Final Masquerade” that are similar to Living Things. In The Hunting Party, Linkin Park bridges the gap between the new electronic-driven sound of Living Things and the former nu-metal sound of Hybrid Theory. The album will be released through Warner Bros. Records. You can pre-order the album through Linkin Park or though Itunes. Linkin Park will be on a fall US tour with Thirty Seconds To Mars, and AFI.

Harrison Ford injured! We have exclusive photos of the incident. ..Kind of.

Legendary actor, Harrison Ford was injured yesterday while filming the much anticipated sequel to Star Wars. GASP! According to UK's the Mirror News, Ford, 71, was filming a scene on board the Millennium Falcon when a piece from the set fell and broke Ford's ankle.

Our highly paid team of experts have recreated the scene with great detail.

Ford slumped to the ground, and was quickly attended to by set staff and other actors. A statement from Disney reads: "Harrison Ford sustained an ankle injury during filming today on the set of 'Star Wars: Episode VII,'" adding "He was taken to a local hospital and is receiving care."

I might be getting carried away here.

Sources have told several news outlets that Ford was actually airlifted to a Hospital in Oxford that specializes in fractures. I highly doubt the injury was severe enough to warrant a chopper medevac, but it's Harrison Ford. If Han Solo gets so much as a bloody nose on your set you best call in air support.

Luckily GI Joe was nearby to help with the airlift.

It's unclear exactly how long Ford will be out recovering, and what, if any changes will be made to the script going forward. For those that don't aleady know, Ford is one of several original "Star Wars" stars returning to the J.J. Abrams-directed sequel. He's joined by fellow alums Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Peter Mayhew.

In the meantime Disney says shooting will continue as planned while Ford recuperates.

Earthquake In Centerville! Photos Of Damage!

Last night at around 10:30, an earthquake rattled Davis County. The epicenter was a few miles east of Centerville, and I felt it at my house in Farmington. Okay, so it wasn't really a major earthquake, and earthquake is probably not the right word to describe it. This was more of a tremor. But I felt the house shake a little bit when it happened. It was like the ground dropped a couple inches and it shook some of the stuff hanging on my walls.

The dogs, cats, and ducks (it's like I have my own damn farm) didn't seem to notice it at all.

But there was serious damage!

Okay, so the damage was limited to my HO scale model railroad. And now that I think of it, this was probably caused by the cat that has found a way into my train room. But still, it was an actual earthquake. And I felt it!

Jack White IS NOT coming to SLC jon | Mid Day

Jack White IS NOT coming to SLC

FALSE ALARM!

Ok, yeah that was my fault.. Here's the story. I saw the news today that Jack White had added tour dates to his "Lazaretto" tour, and I got all bummed that I didnt see a Utah date on there. So I started wrting a post which would include my amazing MSPaint skillz for my blog. As I'm writing and MSPainting away, I see the following under tour dates "--Oct. 10 -- Salt Lake City, UT (The Depot)--" Holy S***! How did I miss that? I was excited, and then pissed that I'd have to re-write my entire post, and then excited again. Apearantly I'm still learning how computers work...

How do I cook a Hot Pocket in this thing?

Turns out, what I saw was the tour schedule for Canada's favorite indie band "The New Pornographers". They have a new album out on August 26th, and WILL in fact be at The Depot on October 10th.  the page had scrolled up while I was feverishly painting Jack White's amazing cheek bones.  So my bad if I got your hopes up. As of right this second, there are no plans for a SLC stop for Jack White. Which is sad, because I think he and I would have had a great time shopping for hats.

Suck it, Smith!  I already bought the last one.

Jack White IS adding a few more stops to this tour, whic now includes a two-night stand in Seattle, a show at Colorado's Red Rocks Amphitheater, and a tour-wrapping set at the Bleacher Theater at Boston's Fenway Park. The one thing I DID get right was the two night stay in Detroit. What the Hell dude? DETROIT?! Over SLC?!! Where's the math on that one. I demand a re-count.

Anyways, sorry for getting your hopes up. I'll spend the next hour or two trying to figure out how to blame it on Ritchie T.

OH! And just in case you're wondering.. Here are the official dates for The Lazaretto Tour:

IT'S NEW MUSIC TIME! jon | Mid Day

IT'S NEW MUSIC TIME!

New stuff today! Let’s face it, so far this year the new music front has been somewhat light. Things are starting to pick up though! Last month we saw some new Coldplay stuff and a new Black Keys album which I loved. So you can imagine how stoked I was when I woke up yesterday to a new Rise Against song in my email. I was quite the happy camper. . Actually scratch that. I hate that phrase as I have never seen someone who is both happy, and a camper.

We're about to be eaten by bears.

Back on topic, the new Rise Against album does not come out for another few weeks, but the new track titled “I Don’t Want To Be Here Anymore” was 100% kick ass. Of course, you can catch the song on X96, or you can use the world wide web and watch the video here.

The other track I’m excited about is a new song from Spoon. If you’re a fan you saw the cryptic teaser titled “R.I.P.” (oooh scary!). Turns out that actually stands for “Rent I Pay” which is the first single from the upcoming album “The Want My Soul”. They debuted the song yesterday on NPR.

I liked NPR when they were just a garage band.

The studio version of “Rent I Pay” is available now, and the album is penciled in for August 5th. Enjoy!

XOXOX

JON SMITH
