New Black Keys Song/Video

I am going to attempt to make my own version of this video today. I just need to find the right location and the right motel office in Salt Lake to stand in front of. I suggest you do the same and send it to me. Make sure you watch this full screen in 1080p and dance to it.

Fall Music 2011 Corey O'Brien | Evenings / Music Director

Fall Music 2011

Well lookie-loo, them leaves is changin' and there's pumpkin-flavored beer on the shelves (the worst idea ever). But you can't enjoy a beer flavored after squash without some good tunes.  So I've put my ears through torture, fear, bad lyrics, some laughs and finally to some albums I think are worth your (or your mom's) hard-earned monies. Note: some content may be NSFW.

Ben Folds "The Best Imitation of Myself: A Retrospective" (3 disc edition) - This isn't just a greatest hits collection but more of an archive with great live Ben Folds cuts, a couple new Ben Folds Five songs and some sweet cover songs: George Michael's "Careless Whisper", Ke$ha's "Sleezy" and The Postal Service's "Such Great Heights."  There is also a single disc edition but come on, spulrge a little.

Justice "Audio, Video, Disco" - I wouldn't say it is as compelling as their last album but dancy enough and engaging enough to be called, "worthy."  As far as electronic music (to use the most basic description without getting into the five-million sub-generes) goes, this is cream of the crop.

Spank Rock "Everything Is Boring and Everyone Is a F---king Liar" - Remeber when Prince used to be funky and make some pretty great music?  Me either, but I have a few greatest hits albums to remind me.  Anyway, Spank Rock is the missing link beetween electro-funk and hip-hop. The opening track, "Ta Da" is about the best hippity-hop track I have heard in a long time.  But don't let that worry you, haters - this is one of the few albums to blur genres in the best possible way.

Patton Oswalt "Finest Hour" - Not music, obviously, but the funniest album you will hear this year.  He even brings back the famous KFC routine in the epilogue form.  Like the best comics you will get a few things to ponder such as the danger of gifted children, the things we do alone in cars and what to do when someone buys all the ham at the deli.

and finally...

The Black Keys "El Camino" - not out until December 6th but we will get their new song this week so be listening...

Honorable Mentions:

Red Hot Chili Peppers "I'm With You"

CSS "La Liberacion"

Nouvelle Vague "The Singers"

The Rapture "In The Grace of Your Love"

Hard-Fi "Killer Sounds"

That's it for this edition. Now go forth with ears wide. - Corey

6 New Albums You Need To Hear This Summer

1. Lowborn – Anberlin

Single: “Stranger Ways” Release Date: July 22

This will be Anberlin’s FINAL album before they call it quits and disband. Yes, unfortunately the band has announced earlier this year that 2014 will be the last year of Anberlin. If this is news to you, please take all the time you need to let this sink in. Are you okay, now? Don’t despair, because, from the sound of it, this new album is looking to be one of their most dynamic albums to date. The aforementioned song, “Stranger Ways,” is their current single. The track is reminiscent of a few of anberlin’s more new-wave tunes from albums like Cities or Never Take Friendship Personal (listen to Alexithymia, Heavy Hearted Work of Staggering Genius, or Dance Dance Christa Paffgen to know what we are talking about). Another one the songs from this album, “Dissenter”, has been leaked online if you want to hear a different tune. The track is a very fast-paced, hard rock driven, dance-mosh song that has singer Stephen Christian screaming the whole time. Very different from “Stranger Ways.” You can check it out here. The album is being released through Tooth & Nail Records. You can pre-order the album through the Tooth & Nail website, through Anberlin, or on Itunes. The album is available for digital download, CD, and Vinyl. If you pre-order the album now, you can get an instant download of another track “Hearing Voices.” You can catch Anberlin on this year’s Vans Warped Tour, August 2nd Utah State Fairpark.

2. The Black Market – Rise Against

Single: “I Don’t Want To Be Here Anymore” Release Date: July 15

It has been awhile since we have had new material from Rise Against. Their last album Endgame was in 2011, with a B-sides album in between and very little touring between those two LPs. This new song sounds like a very typical Rise Against song. Which isn’t a bad thing, Rise against knows how to deliver to their fans. Regardless of how the rest of the album will, we should all pray(send good vibes, do a dance, or whatever you do) that they are coming to Salt Lake City soon. The new album will be released through Interscope Records. You can preorder the song “I Don’t Want To Be Here Anymore” on Itunes.

3. Clouded – This Wild Life

Single: “History” Release Date: OUT NOW

If you’re looking for some more relaxing, chill music to wind down to this summer, then you should check out This Wild Life. This acoustic duo has a knack for writing very melodic, relaxing, acoustic pop/rock music similar to bands such as City & Colour, Dashboard Confessional, and The Maine. The album has been released through Epitaph Records. You can buy the album now through This Wild Life or Itunes. It is available in the following formats: Vinyl, CD, and digital download. You can see This Wild Life on Vans Warped Tour, August 2nd at Utah State Fairpark.

4. Blood Stutter EP – Handsome Ghost

Single: “Blood Stutter” Release Date: OUT NOW

This band features electronic beats and textures mixed with acoustic guitar. Handsome Ghost is the kind of band that you would play at the end of a long day of work or after getting back from that weekend camping trip. Or you could play it on your boat as you are out on the lake with your buddies. Regardless of what you use it for, this EP is essential for your summer playlist. This band is for fans of The Postal Service, Iron & Wine, and Broods. The EP has been released through Color Study Records and is available on Itunes.

5. Disgusting – Beartooth

Single: “Keep Your American Dream” Release Date: OUT NOW

Check out the album that Alternative Press is calling “one of the best albums of 2014.” Beartooth front man, Caleb Shomo, was previously the vocalist/synth player of electronic metalcore band Attack Attack! However, the sound of Beartooth is very different from the work of Attack Attack! Beartooth features a more punk driven sound combined with features of metalcore and post-hardcore music similar to bands such as A Day To Remember, Everytime I Die, and Of Mice & Men. The album has been released through Red Bull Records and you can order the album through Beartooth, Red Bull Records, or Itunes. Beartooth will be coming through Utah on the Vans Warped Tour, August 2nd.

6. The Hunting Party – Linkin Park

Single: “Guilty All The Same(feat. Akrim)” Release Date: June 17

You have already heard “Until It’s Gone” a few times here at X96. They have just released a music video for that song. But here is a more dynamic song from The Hunting Party. “Guilty All The Same” brings out the more hard rock/metal roots that Linkin Park started out with. There are a few other songs that bring back that old Linkin Park sound, see “wastelands” for example. Linkin Park also breaks some new ground by bringing in System Of A down guitarist, Damien, on the track “Rebellion.” As well Tom Morello (former Rage Against The Machine and Audioslave guitarist) for a track titled “Drawbar.” There are some other tracks such as “Final Masquerade” that are similar to Living Things. In The Hunting Party, Linkin Park bridges the gap between the new electronic-driven sound of Living Things and the former nu-metal sound of Hybrid Theory. The album will be released through Warner Bros. Records. You can pre-order the album through Linkin Park or though Itunes. Linkin Park will be on a fall US tour with Thirty Seconds To Mars, and AFI.
