Salt Lake's Newest Convention Will Have You In Stitches Corey O'Brien |

Salt Lake's Newest Convention Will Have You In Stitches

You've seen them worn at the Twilight Concert Series, Motley Crue concerts, folks who hang out at piano bars or on middle-aged dudes who drive Corvettes. Now it's mainstream. X96 is proud to sponsor the first ever Yarn-Butt Con.

"It's a whole culture and way of life." - Susan Dazzle

As Salt Lake continues to grow we also continue to bring in larger conventions. Organizers for events that were once held in bigger, more cosmopolitan cities have discovered Utah. Times are changing along the Wasatch Front to the point where more and more people are saying things like, "Wow, Salt Lake is really growing up" or "Ya know, Salt Lake City really is coming into its own. Perhaps I'll open up a hotpot restaurant" or "What's Uber?"

There is no denying it. In a few years we won't even remember there once was an abandoned building standing where people over 30 told us the Zephyr Club used to be.

That is why X96 is proud to sponsor of the first annual Yarn-Butt Con.

Yarn-Butt aficionados will pack the 3rd hall on the West side of the Salt Palace Convention Center in late September to show off the latest in large-stitch technology. "It's not always the size of the stitch but the placement, curvature and even spacing that really make that yarn pop" said convention spokesperson, Susan Dazzle. "It's more than just pants though. It's a whole culture and way of life. Being this is the first year the con is in Salt Lake we really want to show not just the attendees, but the world, what yarn-butt is really all about."

For those of you who don't know, Yarn-Butt is when extra large stitching is used in jeans and the occasional shirt for a fashionable effect. It is sometimes accompanied by fake jewels either glued or fastened on to the denim for added eye-catching showiness. Yarn-Butt is often fashioned into dragons, Fleur de Lys, random dates that signify nothing or letters, which also signify nothing.

Nikki Peedles, yarn-butt consultant and former Pinterest expert.

Dazzle was proud to announce Nikki Peedles, yarn-butt consultant of the stars, will be making an appearance as the Grand Marshall of this year's con.  She has worked for Bogart McConaughey, brother of Matthew, that guy you always see at the bar wearing guyliner and really shiny hair gel and that dude who cut you off in his illegally jacked-up F150 and the guy who can tell you which bronzer is the best for your particular skin tone.

"This is about expression through the stitching on your jeans. There's not a better way stand out and tell people who you really are in such a person way." exclaims Nikki. "Embroidery is radical, like throwing tea into a harbor, being a birther or being a Supreme Court Judge."

Accessory booths for wallet chains, spiked belts and bedazzled shirts will round out the convention.

The Radio From Hell Show is MOVING, Finally!!

Hey, Organized Intern here. Just wanted to remind you all, in case we haven't discussed it enough, that we're moving today! Which means that for the next week or two, things might go wrong... so it should be exactly what you're used to!!

But seriously, folks, the podcasts might not be up in a timely manner; if you call in - the interns might accidentally hang up on you; the live video feed may go in and out; the possibilities of what could go wrong are endless. So, please, be patient with us as we transition to the new (and hopefully MUCH MUCH BETTER) studio located at:

50 W Broadway (300 South) Salt Lake City, UT 84101

If you have any thoughts on how our magical new station can make your ear holes happy, you be sure to email Richie T richie@x96.com and let him know how.

And thanks for listening!

X96 at Fantasy Con Richie T |

X96 at Fantasy Con

Fantasy Con took place last week July 3-5 at the Salt Palace and Radio From Hell sent their intern Hollywood Tim to experience the fantasy! Take it away, Tim!

Fantasy Con was packed with excitement from the start. The long line of fans dressed as various fantasy characters eagerly waited to get in and live out their fantasies. Packed with fantastic celebrity guests and a plethora of exhibits and interactive events, Fantasy Con had something for everybody.

The Fantasy Con Dragon

Welcome to Fantasy Con!

I started my day by checking out all of the booths in the Hall of Heroes. One of the best booths for kids was the “Fairy Tailored” booth where kids could get dressed up like their favorite princess. Every member of their staff was dressed as a Princess or Fairy Godmother making every kid excited to see their favorite princess.

For the adults there were so many great booths with collectibles, DVD’s, large walking monsters and more. One stop that everybody loved was our BFOP’s at Creature Encounters. Lucky visitors got to hold the snakes, bearded dragons, spiders and many other crawly creatures they had to see.

BFOP's from Creature Encounters

Fear Factory brought some of their creatures to wander arounds Fantasy Con that gave the unsuspecting fan quite the scare when they turned the corner to find the monster waiting for them.

The Free Archery Range was a very popular attraction with a continual line all weekend long for fans wanting to channel their inner Legolas and Katniss.

Throughout the main hall, there were plenty of props for fan photo ops. The most popular seemed to be the Jabba and Ewok props. Fans were able to take pictures with the beloved Star Wars characters while waiting to get in line for autographs with celebrity guests.

Jabba!

Ewoks!

The panels during Fantasy Con were excellent. The cast of the hit SyFy show, ‘Lost Girl’ kicked things off Thursday morning with a hilarious and entertaining panel.

The cast of 'Lost Girl'

Sean Astin’s panel was definitely one to remember. The actor recounted many great stories from The Goonies, Rudy, The Lord of the Rings, and even the locally filmed movie, The Freemason. Two of the highlights of his panel were hearing Sean recite the speech his gave to Froto as Sam Wise in Lord of the Rings: Two Towers, as well as shouting “Goonies never say die!”

Sean Astin

Following Sean Astin’s panel was The Hobbit Whose Line Is It Anyway, featuring members of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings cast. Graham McTavish, Jed Brophy, Ken Stott, John Callen, William Kircher, and Adam Brown entertained the crowd with stories on and off the set of both of the herald films, and insight about a special calendar that they had made for Director Peter Jackson.

The Hobbit Whose Line Is It Anyway

The much-anticipated arrival of the hilarious filmmaker Simon Pegg left everybody in attendance more than satisfied. Simon Pegg’s panel was hilarious as fans asked questions about his classic films from Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and The World’s End. Simon gave the crowd an in depth discussion into the psyche of his well-written and beloved characters. For the film geeks in the audience, this was a great opportunity to learn from a great filmmaker about the lengths he goes to for great character development.

Simon Pegg

The last panel I attended was Mark Sheppard from Supernatural, Doctor Who, Firefly and Battlestar Galactica. Mark’s main discussion was geared towards playing the character of Crowley in Supernatural. I must say, for being known as the King of Hell, Mark Sheppard was an incredibly nice guy. Mark didn’t have a moderator for his panel and spent the entire panel at the front of the stage with the crowd, where he would continually climb off the stage and hug members of the crowd and even talk to a little girl waiting for her mom to ask as question.

Mark Sheppard

Overall, my entire Fantasy Con experience was excellent. If you weren’t able to make it out this year you truly missed out on a great party. I couldn’t have asked for a better time and can’t wait for next year’s event.

What Do We Do If The Radio Station Breaks? jon | Mid Day

What Do We Do If The Radio Station Breaks?

What do you do if the radio station breaks?

Radio stations are one of those things that never stop running. We never close, and there is always someone working to keep this sumbitch on the air day and night. Which means at any given time there are about 50 things that could go wrong and knock us in to the dark. Our team of Ninjaneers or the DJ in the studio can fix most things fairly quickly. But every so often something gets messed up and you're neck deep in suck. Which I guess is why I'm often asked "What happens when the radio station breaks?"

Here at the X96, and pretty much every radio station in the country we have all of our music loaded on to a computer. It makes it much easier for the DJ's to find the music they want to play during their show, and it opens up a little bit of time during the day for me to fart around on the internet and look at cat videos and yojoe.com. (or write a blog). But computers suck, and at some point they all break. That's what happened yesterday at 10:14am. Our computer froze and Nuke Em and I were making this face for about 30 seconds.

"MOTHERF#&@ER!"

The obvious solution would be to throw in a CD and reboot! Except we're moving into a new studio this weekend and all of our CD's were boxed up. Not to mention that we stopped using CD's about 12 years ago. The only CD's we HAD in the studio were either for an X-Sets weekend, or for the 90's At Noon, and those had been taken out about a week ago. Luckily the Lorde song we were playing was not cut short by the frozen compy, so we had about 40 seconds to figure out what to do. Nuke Em sprang into action and found one of the half dozen or so boxes containing our woefully outdated music collection and we started partying like it was 1999.

   I don't get it...

I'm a little ashamed at how spoiled I've become with the computers. When I first started in radio we didn't even have a computer in the studio. Let alone have one for music. When we did finally put one in, my Program Director at the time, Biff Raff gave us very specific instructions NOT to use it. We didn’t listen of course. But now, we have 4. Only one of which actually controls the music, and it has no back up. Which meant for the next 90 minutes we were flying old school.

Look! We’re DJ’s!

Eventually the system came back, and all was well with the world. It was actually kinda fun, Hopefully the listeners enjoyed the Jon Smith and Todd Nuke ‘Em 90’s party machine while we were making a huge mess and trying not to panic.

This is why we can’t have nice things.

At the same time it was a little sad knowing that since the CD wont be coming with us to our new studio, I may very well have just played the last CD that X96 will have on the air. So for future reference, it was Smashing Pumpkins “Today”

XOXOX JONSMITH
