Imagine Dragons makes history on Billboard Hot 100

They started out as a humble band playing in little venues in Provo, and now Imagine Dragons have reached super-star status. That's not an easy thing to accomplish in the world of entertainment, and it rarely happens to a band on their debut album. They've been selling out concerts all over the world, and their album Night Visions is about to go double-platinum.

Imagine Dragons are currently tied for having the longest run on the Billboard Hot 100 with their song "Radioactive." It's been on the chart for 76 weeks and will likely surpass the song it is tied with next week. (That song is "I'm Yours" by Jason Mraz, in case you are curious.) Two years ago, most of us didn't know anything about Imagine Dragons, but they've worked hard and have pretty much taken over the world.

And it couldn't happen to a nicer band. We appreciate everything they've done for us and our listeners and we are excited to see their continued success.

The 17th Annual X96 Toyota Big Ass Show (RECAP)

"The 17th Annual Toyota Big Ass Show! If You Weren't There, Start Crying Now..."

Written by Ami Chopine

Because you missed the biggest party of the year. It included scary face painting from Castle of Chaos, food, skater and biker tricks, food, man sized plastic runabout balls on water, beer, and of course food. Even Waldo made an appearance. But what we were really there for was the music and meeting the bands. Buying an album from Graywhale guaranteed a meeting. Here is a quick recap of the bands that played.

I caught Shrink the Giant before when they were competing for the BASH 2012 opening spot at Battle of the Bands in Graywhale, and they did equally as well in the bigger venue. If I want to be a rock star, I think need to grow my hair down to my waist for epic hair flipping. Wow. That takes a lot of energy, and the music wasn't half bad either. Their lyrics are fun and their music shows sophistication beyond their youth.

The secret to weight loss is to buy a guitar, rock it with a couple of thousand people, and then smash it. This workout works best if you do it several times a week. But seriously, as one twitterer put it, Dead Sara was siiiick. Emily Johnston has skills and a fantastic voice. It's good to see a woman powering it up.

Life tastes sweeter when it's wrapped in accents from Liverpool. I think every girl's heart beat a bit faster with every word The Wombats spoke or sang. But it wasn't just words that moved the crowd. This band played their instruments with passion and owned the stage, giving us a set with clean sound and a great show.

A crew cut, some colorful arms, and a voice to match. It was a Situation Infatuation with Eve 6. I didn’t get to see these guys much, but a lot of people did.

Imagine Dragons is a band that knows what it means to be men. Real men. The kind of warriors that aren't just wearing shining armor. They're living it. They've been to the bleak battlefield, wielded their instruments with power, and raised the standard. And then, when I watched them with their fans at a meet and greet they were totally sweet and kind. Like I said. Real men. But there's a problem with watching Imagine Dragon's in concert. Their albums are just shadows of the real thing, tiding their audience over until they can catch another live show.

Sadly, I missed Grouplove's set, but I did get to see them at the meet and greet. Besides having great fun on stage (or so I'm told) and in their videos, these artists are full of class. In an environment where they have the time, they really talk with and engage their fans. Before they came in, when my mustached husband asked if I wanted a pic with the band, I shrugged a non-committal no. Whatever. And yet, after seeing the band, yeah. I wanted to be Itchin' on a Photograph with them. Dude. Corny. Sorry.

Who knew that Orem could generate such an emo band like The Used? With a sound and lyrics that scrape out a hollow in the soul whether they're shreaking or crooning (and they do both equally well), The Used have turned anger and pain into a reason to jump in the air, pump some fists, and lay down some money for a CD.

Neon Trees gave us the grand finale. I’d been looking at those neon animal print balloons all day. They were delivered at the end of a set full of intense glitz with a more epic rock sound than their recorded music. Tyler has some serious charisma. He’s blond this month with an amazing studded leather jacket, and Chris Allen had purple hair that matched the atmosphere of their stage show. Orem's music scene appears to be some kind of primordial soup, with all the right stuff to generate some great music.

My Big Ass Show Adventures

Another Big Ass Show is in the history books, and I am thankful to everyone who attended. My day started out with a bit of a jolt when I heard that Brendan Urie of Panic! At The Disco was sick with malaria and wasn't going to be there. I have to give that band credit for making sure the show went on. They recruited a few friends to cover for him, including local musican Brogan Kelby, and  Ransom Wydner from King Niko. Brogan got to sing "The Ballad of Mona Lisa" and Ransom sang "Nine in the Afternoon." Thanks to everyone for staying to watch the performance even though Brendan wasn't there. Tyler Glenn (another local) from Neon Trees got to sing a few songs with them, and it turned out to be a special event. Brendan Urie is sad that he coulndn't attend, and the band will get back to Salt Lake in full force just as soon as possible. I was particularly thrilled to see Panic's bassist Dallon Weekes take over the lead vocals on a few songs and then treat us to an acoustic version of The Brobecks tune "Love At First Sight."

Another special moment was Switchfoot's performance of "Dare You To Move" when Jon Foreman invited Brogan Kelby onstage to play his guitar and sing along. We had mentioned to the band how important that song was to Brogan and that it really helped him get through some rough times. They were thrilled about it and invited him to play it with them. What a great bunch of guys! The performance was truly amazing, and I've  posted a couple different camera angles (from fans) of the song.

Big Ass Mug with Much Mex Love

Radio From Hell friend Hyrum Finch is a dry-cleaner in Delaware. He has filled his Big Ass Mug with a delightful alcoholic beverage and shared it with some Mexicans who work at his shop. Here are two of his happy friends:

Let's not ask Hyrum about that stain on his shorts. He is a dry cleaner after all. He should be able to get that out without a trace.

Thanks for listening Hyrum and all of you,

-Bill
