Meet The Bands: Priory Richie T |

Meet The Bands: Priory

How they met:

Kyle: Brandon and I met at a show years ago and then randomly ended up moving in together at this crazy old flop house with nine other guys and just started playing music together there. We had no car, we had nothing but a ton of equipment.

Brandon: I'd been living in this, I mean literally like a flop house. It was the nastiest bachelor pad, the kitchen was unusable, the bathroom was completely unusable because they were so filthy. I was sitting out front having a beer one day when Kyle pulled up and I was like “what the hell is going on bro?”. We started playing music I think that first week after he moved in and immediately we just clicked and it was kind of just a done deal.

The Flop House now:

It's been condemned, they tore it down, we drove by the other day and it's gone and they're building something where human beings can live.

Star-crossed band mates:

Kyle: We both went our separate ways, Brandon became a ferrier, he shoed horses and I went and worked at a non-profit… and came back together about five years ago and started this band. Brandon: It was like three years. I went to Oklahoma, I went to horse shoeing school in Oklahoma and then came back to Northwestern, trying to set up a business.

Writing Process:

Kyle: It's changed over this album. We had toured on a record before for about a year and a half and on the way back from one of the last tours Brandon and I looked at each other were like we've gotta do this thing our way. We built the studio ourselves and started recording this record. We quit every other day job and every other interest and basically clocked regular hours, 50 hours a week plus, and just wrote music every day. We just kind of held each other accountable that way and basically learned how to create in that environment.

Brandon: We've completely outgrown our old record, we made it really, really fast. Honestly, we didn't know what we were doing. We cranked out a collection of songs and immediately got ourselves a vehicle and got out on the road. And after about a year being out on the road and doing whatever, playing shows, we just realized this is not what we wanted to do. And Kyle and I, when we first started playing music together we spent a lot of time talking about what we wanted our sound to be. The infusion of electronic beats and really nasty synthesizers, but then with a really strong contrast of acoustic instrumentation and well thought out harmonies and melodies. We at that time, when we started, we didn't know how to execute, but after spending enough time, three or four years together, we figured out a system.

Warped Tour: Courage My Love, Captain Capa

A few weeks ago at Vans Warped Tour, Richie T and his team of expert producers recorded 5 straight hours of interviews - that's around 25 artists FYI. Over the past few weeks, we've been releasing videos of these interviews on the daily: bands like Less Than Jake, Real Friends, The Maine, Anberlin, and tons more!

In today's installment, Mercedes of Courage My Love details her thrill-seeking activities, and German duo Captain Capa help us Americans understand the cool electro-punk scene happening in Germany now.

Watch the interviews and read a short write up below!

Courage My Love

Mercedes

From: Ontario, Canada

--- Her Identical Twin ---

My twin sister and I – she’s in the band, she’s the drummer…Yeah we’re identical twins…We don’t look exactly alike, but I’ve had people come up to me and I’ll be like, “Oh, what’s your name?” and they’ll be kind of bummed out . They’ll be like, “We met you like half an hour ago.” And I’ll be like, “Nah dude, that wasn’t me! I promise.” --- The Band Name ---

So we went to this old repertoire theatre and we saw this 1936, Black and White, sci-fi movie called Things To Come, and it’s a line from the movie. So the movie’s kind of post-apocalypse. These parents are standing overtop of their kids, wondering what their future will hold and the father is just like, “Have courage my love,” to his wife. So we thought, that’s kind of cool. I like to think of it as a call to our generation, to our youth because a lot of problems from previous generations have fallen on to our shoulders. You have to have courage to make a difference in this world, and you have to have courage to be the change that you want to see in the world.

--- Runner-Up Band Names ---

I always wanted to be in a political punk band called Marie Antoinette…Or we were sitting in my friend’s basement, and Phoenix thought about, what about Catches like Matches. I think we were lighting matches or something. But Courage My Love stuck.

--- Thrill-Seeking ---

My boyfriend lives in Malibu, so there’s all really cool stuff to do in Malibu. Just this year, he’s been pushing me to do all that cool stuff. We’ve been surfing, we’ve been parasailing, we’re gonna go cliff diving, we’re gonna go skydiving which I’m terrified of, but it’s gonna happen…Somebody stop me! I’m going crazy over here!

Captain Capa

Hannes & Maik

--- Their Sound ---

Hannes: I would say basically it’s like electronic pop music. That’s the big overall wording for it, but we have lots of influences from independent music and old emo rock stuff. So it’s a really wild mixture, but it all comes together with electronic instruments.

--- How they got on Warped ---

Hannes: It came together because we grew up with music like that, we grew up with Warped music. With Taking Back Sunday, Jimmy Eat World, stuff like that. and parts of that are still in our music so I think we might be, music-wise, we might be the connecting dot between the EDM scene that’s going really crazy right now, and the kind of emo-influenced Alternative stuff that’s going on at Warped. I think we fit in here really well. That might be how we found our way

--- Self-Taught Musicians ---

Hannes: We’ve known each other since kindergarten like since really really early. Then we went to this festival together where we saw electronic bands performing for the first time, and we saw what was going on onstage, and we’re like, “This is so much different than all the punk bands we did before, and it looks like so much fun! It looks like the musicians have actually, they’re playing with stuff on stage.” We wanted to do that. We just bought ourselves some synthesizers and without any knowledge of it, we just started doing it, and it worked out so well.

--- The German Music Scene ---

Hannes: We have a strong scene of like electronic punk music going on, which is really crazy because I haven’t seen it in any other country. We have political-influenced bands that are really close to the punk rock scene but they make electronic music and that’s the scene where we kinda came out from.

Maik: I think we have a good independent scene in Germany. I like it.

Hannes: Yeah. Every band knows each other and every festival is like a family meeting.

--- Other Warped Bands They Suggest ---

Hannes: Bad Rabbits

Maik: Anberlin

Warped Tour: For All Those Sleeping, Lost In Society, Divided Heaven

A few weeks ago at Vans Warped Tour, Richie T and his team of expert producers recorded 5 straight hours of interviews - that's around 25 artists FYI. Over the past few weeks, we've been releasing videos of these interviews on the daily: bands like Less Than Jake, Real Friends, The Maine, Anberlin, and tons more!

In today's installment, we determine the appropirate amount of chest hair with For All Those Sleeping, how Hector of Lost In Society had a pet monkey, and Divided Heaven explains how to fangirl about bands without becoming a "punisher".

Watch the interviews and read a short write up below!

For All Those Sleeping

David Volgman-Stevens

From: Minnesota

We all come from a small town, went to high school together. Sartelle, Minnesota. We played a lot of barn shows and things like that…it’s great to be out here, having a blast. Couldn’t think of a better way to spend my summer.

--- The Band Name Is A Joke. Really. ---

When we were younger, a few of us were in a punk band – a horrible punk band in high school – and we hated heavy music and screaming music which we do now, so we made this joke band to play like dumb songs and stuff that were heavy, and we just made fun of it. We were like, “What’s the dumbest band name we could think of that sounds like emo and screamo? Oh, For All Those Sleeping! That’s sounds so stupid!” Then years later when we started this band, we were like, “What should we call it? Remember that name that we made up a while ago, For All Those Sleeping?” And we just stuck with it. No significance, or nothing special to me. It’s a joke, to be honest.

--- Australian Warped Tour ---

That was our first time in Australia. We weren’t sure what to expect but they love music down there. Definitely we had some amazing fans, amazing shows…I remember we had this one girl who’s a big fan of ours, she literally flew to every single show on Warped Tour, bought a ticket to every one to see us. They have some diehard fans out there. Definitely a great place to play and a great first tour in Australia. Can’t wait to go back.

--- Fan Tattoos ---

We have people everyday that have our lyrics tattooed on them or stuff like that. Even further than that, what kids are liking to do now is they actually have you write down the lyrics that they want in your handwriting. I write a lot of our lyrics so I’ll write it down, and I have horrible handwriting and the kid’s like, “Cool! I’m getting this tattooed on me!” Then I’ll see them 6 months later on tour, and they’ll have my handwriting tattooed on them. It blows my mind ‘cuz it looks horrible a lot of times because I have horrible handwriting, but I try to tell them just get the lyrics done by an artist; have them look cool. But it means a lot to them.

The Summerset, The Protomen

Lost In Society

Zach and Hector

--- Moving from Brazil to the U.S. ---

Hector: My family immigrated to the states when I was 10 years-old and I was always in to music. I played the violin and the piano when I was back home – back in Brazil. When I moved here, I started playing drums at 14. I met these guys, and we’ve been together for about 6 years.

--- Pets… ---

Hector: I had a monkey when I was in Brazil…A little spider monkey and his name was monkey.

--- Warped Tour ---

Zach: It’s weird because we just hopped on a week and a half ago so we’re still ready to go. Hector: We can go for another 3 weeks man! Zach: But everyone’s like done with it. And we’re like, “Come on let’s go! Let’s have fun!”

--- Sitting On a New Record ---

Zach: We have a 28 hour drive back to New Jersey from Denver, and then this summer we’re laying low a little bit, in the fall we’re gonna do some regional stuff. And then we’re going to Europe in March. We’re setting on a brand new record right now. We’re searching for labels…We really wanna take our time with this one and find the right way to put it out and the right people who really want to work

Divided Heaven

Jeff

From: Pennsylvania

--- The Band Name ---

It was a book and a film by Christa Wolf who is a German author. I read the book while I was studying in Berlin in 2003 during a study abroad thing. The book was about a love story that was happening as the Berlin Wall was being erected – the guy wanted to go to the West, the girl wanted to stay in the East. I liked the idea of heaven – the word – being used in a secular context, so I stole the name. And the url DividedHeaven.com.

--- Abroad in Berlin ---

I was playing in a number of different bands. I left them all, just temporarily (in D.C., in Philly and on the East Coast) to go study for 5 months, and it was the first time that I was ever just a full-time student with no job, no band, no extracurricular stuff. I had my guitar with me, so I would just write songs, and that was the first time where I really started to write songs that didn’t fit the mold of any of the bands I was playing in. I just decided to start doing a solo project then. It wasn’t until really 2009 when it came to fruition, but the idea was borne in Berlin.

--- Warped Tour Tips: Don’t Be A Punisher ---

You will get sunburned, so you have to lather up. You will get dehydrated so you need to drink water constantly. You can’t be a punisher, meaning you can’t go up to bands, “OH MAN I LOVE YOUR BAND AHHHHH!”…You can’t really do that. You have to be a little more tactful than that, and you just can’t be a naïve jerk. If you get invited to play Warped Tour, you’re expected to carry yourself with a certain amount of dignity and respect, and a certain amount of – you should know what’s going on. You can’t be dumb.

--- The Warped Band He Fangirls Over ---

Saves The Day changed my life. Chris Connelly, their main songwriter, is probably my favorite songwriter beside John Lennon. Lyrically, he’s a tremendous guitar player too. But every record that that band has done has sounded completely different, and they’ve always been progressing. I think that says a lot for a band that’s under the punk and hardcore umbrella; it’s really easy to do the same thing over and over and over again. They’ve always pushed the limits: sometimes they’ve gotten a little weird, and sometimes they’ve brought it back to the roots. I met him the other night, and I didn’t have a freak out moment on the outside, but on the inside…He and I met in Pennsylvania in the late 90’s. Forever ago. He didn’t remember me, I didn’t expect him to remember me. So definitely Saves The Day. I came close to freaking out, but I didn’t do it.

Lou Ferrigno Interview With Richie T

Lou Ferrigno talks to Richie T about being Michael Jackson's personal trainer, coming to this year's Salt Lake Comic Con, and much more!

LISTEN BELOW!

Being Michael Jackson’s Personal Trainer

Well it was different because he [Michael Jackson] was so involved in music that he never really weight trained or exercised as much before. So when I was with him, I would give him a live regiment, like a routine so he could do it to retain his flexibility and stamina.

Going to Salt Lake Comic Con 2014

Well, I do a panel at the Con also, and I tell the fans to stay away from drugs, sex, and violence. That’s important because the fact that they come to a comic con that’s so positive, and you meet people, and make connections to celebrities, and there’s a Q&A. It’s always about walking away with a smile on your face instead of being depressed and doing the wrong things to yourself.

Warped Tour: The Ready Set, We Are The In Crowd, Crown The Empire

A few weeks ago at Vans Warped Tour, Richie T and his team of expert producers recorded 5 straight hours of interviews - that's around 25 artists FYI. Over the past few weeks, we've been releasing videos of these interviews on the daily: bands like Less Than Jake, Real Friends, The Maine, Anberlin, and tons more!

In today's installment, we have trendsetter Jordan of The Ready Set, triplet Tay from We Are The In Crowd, and well-coiffed bros Dave and Bennett from Crown The Empire.

Listen to the interviews and read a short write up below!

---

The Ready Set

Jordan of The Ready Set showed up at our Warped Tour tent in a gentlemanly hat and Jackie O glasses to talk to us about other Warped bands we should know, his upcoming headlining tour, and then Richie turns travel agent to give Jordan tips on how to vacation in Maui.

From: Fort Wayne, Indiana

--- His Second Warped Tour ---

We did it in 2011, first time...2011 was cool, but this time I think is better because I kinda knew what I was in for with it. In 2011 it was a lot more, much much heavier bands, and I lean more on the pop side a little bit. Now I think we’ve got much more of an overlap with friends of ours like We Are The In Crowd, The Maine, Mayday Parade, Breathe Carolina, and bands like that where I think we share somewhat of a similar fan base. We’ve been having better crowds, it’s just been a great time. I love It.

--- Warped Bands we should check out ---

The coolest thing to me about the tour this year specifically is a band called Saves The Day is on our stage which, that’s one of my favorite bands. I have a Saves The Day tattoo, in fact. So that’s my absolute favorite band to watch…We have some friends in a band called Air Dubai who I don’t think they’ve done [Warped] before…They’re the nicest dudes and they usually play a little bit before or after us every day, so we have a similar set time. I get to catch they’re set a lot and it’s really great.

--- Upcoming Headlining Tour  ---

After tomorrow, heading home for a little bit, gonna film a couple music videos, then doing a headlining tour in the fall which coincidentally starts here in Salt Lake City. It’s October 26 is the first day of it.

--- Vacation Plans ---

Well my first plan of business is to hang out with my dog and cat for a bit, ya know just chill with them. And then I think I’m gonna go on a vacation…I’m gonna go to Hawaii, just kick it for a little bit. I’m going to Maui. Taking in the scene, I’ve never been there before. I haven’t gone on a vacation since I started The Ready Set.

---

We Are The In Crowd

Tay Jardine

--- The Band Name ---

We were originally called The In Crowd, which was just another bad name. We made it longer because we had a copyright issue with a band from Jamaica who decided to go on a reunion tour, they’re like a band from the 70’s. So when our band started in 2009 we were trying to get the rights to the name and they said no.

--- Being on Warped Tour for the third time ---

This has been the easiest Warped Tour for us, and I think just because of experience. Everyone knows what their role is, because each tour is different whether it be a club tour or a festival tour or traveling overseas or whatever it is, we all try to help ourselves stay sane. But here, here it’s so different because it’s like – there’s a routine every day, to the point where you eat at the same time, the exact same time every single day. Catering’s only from 12 to 2, I don’t know, you just get used to it. We’re so used to the people on the tour and it’s just nice to know the ropes. It’s comfortable at this point.

--- What’s coming next ---

We have a couple weeks off and then we’re going off in the Philippines with some of the bands that are on the tour actually. I think The Summer Set is on our date, and so is Echosmith, so that will be cool. And then we’re home for most of September and we have a really exciting Fall tour that’s coming up that’s not announced yet.

  ---

Crown The Empire

Bennett & Dave from Crown The Empire talk about how Dave came to be the band barber, what they’re favorite pizza toppings are, how they stay in shape on the tour, and where they’re off to after Warped Tour.

--- Dave the Band Barber ---

Dave: Honestly, our drummer one day needed a haircut really bad and I was like, “Dude, I think I can do it,” and I had a little kit. I just tried it and then he was like, “It’s really not bad!” So I just did it every time and I was like, “Ok I’m getting better at this!” So I just tried it with everyone else like, let me cut your hair. I’ve cut tons of hair now and I’ve just gotten way better at it over time.

Bennett: He does a great job.

--- The Band Name ---

Dave: At the time it was totally random. It kind of developed a meaning throughout our career. But at the beginning they came up with it – our guitarist and bass players right now. They’re the original members of the band.

Bennett: In the garage where they started the band, they were just chillin and they had a big list of [band] names. We have bunch of bad ones that we talk about all the time. One of them was “Strawberry Centrefold”. Neither of us were in the band at the time, thank God.

Dave: Yeah we didn’t have any of these ideas.

Bennett: “Laying in Circles”, “A Tree Without”.

Dave: “Purple Is Grape”.

Bennett: We could’ve been Purple Is Grape. That could’ve been real life.

--- Staying in shape on tour ---

Dave: Not gonna lie, It is the hardest thing in the world to make yourself do it ‘cuz when you’re out on tour like this – especially with the heat and everything like that – you’re exhausted from just you’re day in general and what you have to do. But we take the time out of every single day to work out. We make sure we lift weights and do cardio.

Bennett: We get really creative with the certain exercises we do.

Dave: An hour and a half every day.

--- Latest Album – The Resistance: Rise of the Runaways ---

We actually just released our album. It’s called The Resistance: Rise of the Runaways. It’s a concept album it’s got a whole story behind it that would take forever if I got too deep in to it.
