Warped Tour: The Maine, Less Than Jake, The Protomen

Last Saturday at Vans Warped Tour, Richie T and his team of expert producers recorded 5 straight hours of interviews - that's around 25 artists FYI. Over the next few weeks, we've been releasing videos of these interviews on the daily: bands like Less Than Jake, Real Friends, We Are The In Crowd, The Ready Set and tons more!

In today's installment, we have The Maine who explain why they have about 80 pairs of socks on tour with them currently, Warped royalty Roger from Less Than Jake, and the painted faces behind The Protomen.

Listen to the interviews and read a short write up below!

The Maine

Pat & Kennedy

From: Phoenix, Arizona

--- Staying Clean on Warped Tour ---

Kennedy: It’s that pack of like 8 shirts from Walmart. Seriously. I just wear then until they’re gross, then I cut the sleeves off ‘em, wear them as a tank then…

Pat: In the trash

Richie: Is that what you do as well, Pat?

Kennedy: He’s been wearing that shirt for a month

Pat: I took a shower last night so, I’m uh not doing bad. [Smells his pits] It’s alright.

Kennedy: It’s very much like that. I feel like on this tour especially, you feel like you’re on a campground every single day. You’re kind of away from the general society. For us, this last part of the tour has been a lot of shows in a row. We did ten shows right before our day off yesterday. So yesterday we felt almost like culture shock just being back in a normal city and walking around and doing stuff.

--- Ecstatic Fans ---

Pat: Honestly for us, just having people that support what we do as a band is exciting. So the fact that they’re energized and they’re excited to tell their friends about our band, I mean, you couldn’t ask for a better group of fans. … Pat: There’s honestly like so many things they know and they find out about us. Just thinks that somehow become a thing. Like I’ve probably gotten 80 pairs of socks on this tour, all from fans. [Shows Richie his shark socks.]

Richie: Oh those are killer!

Pat: Yeah they’re acutlaly killer.

Richie: Yeah they’re killer sharks.

Pat: I’ve probably gotten close to 80 pairs just on this tour and it just kind of became a thing. I’ve never said bring me socks. And actually just before I came over here, I was hanging out at the merch table and a girl handed me a big with 15 pairs of funky socks.

--- New Music in 2015 ---

Pat: We’re going out in to the middle of the desert probably in November of this year and we’re gonna record a new record, and it’ll be out in some point in 2015…It’s actually this crazy looking house. It’s like a giant dome. And we’re gonna get all the good vibes we can.

Kennedy: It’s a space ship. The aliens built it.

Less Than Jake

Roger Lima

--- New Generation of Fans ---

We're around 22 years right now, it's crazy man. We have parents bringing their kids out and being like 'I saw you guys play when I was twenty and now I'm bringing my ten year old daughter to come see you guys play' and you're like wow, it's become a generational thing. It's mind-blowing.

--- Being on Warped Tour Again ---

Honestly, it's Kevin Lyman. We've had a great relationship with him for a really long time. When this tour started, it was really punk rock at it's core. All the production and all the people working this tour we've known for years, we're friends with them. It's a very comfortable place for us to be, this is easy. We understand what's going on out here, it's good to have some perks after being out here for so long. It's a great tour to do. Who knows, music has changed so much, there's not really a lot of punk rock out here. A lot of the bands are more modern and more screaming and what have you, but that's what the kids are listening to. Warped Tour morphs pretty quickly. Who knows if we'll ever been here again but this year, actually it's been a blast. There's been some bands out here that, I never really got to see The Story So Far before they're a great band live. A band called Four Years Strong, that I'd only heard a couple songs of but I've been watching them all summer, blowing me away. Even for me, I've been out here a long time, there's still stuff to discover, it's still a good time.

--- Keeping the Shows Interesting ---

We try to mix it up. We're known for our stuff that came out in the late 90's and that's cool. We're still making records, we put out with a record last year, we still put out singles, we have a single out right now. And just kind of being interesting with merch and with playing new shows and new possibilities. For example, we're going to go play in Russia right after the Warped Tour and we've never been there before, been a band for twenty two years and that's never happened. So, there's still new discoveries to be made and to us it's still an adventure.

--- Giving Advice to Other Bands ---

Sometimes you become friends with some younger bands and then you find yourself holding court a little bit, giving some ideas or what you went through or some opinions and stuff. But it's funny because we're towards the end of the tour and now is where a lot of these guys in younger bands are like 'man, I've been scared to talk to you the whole tour but I listened to your record when I was in Jr. High'.

---

The Protomen

--- Full make up ---

I wash it off and it's still there five days later.

--- Band name ---

It's actually a play on the character Proto Man from a video game from 1987-ish. It was a game called Mega Man, you remember it, really good game with a sweet soundtrack. We basically just took that game idea, the story of that, and said eh, we can make that story a lot meaner and make it more like Escape From New York or Mad Max. Kind of make the whole thing an anti-hero tough epic, sweet update of that story line. We just kind of did that with music.

--- Band history ---

Our first song was written in 2003, and the next year we played the first show. So I guess technically, [we've been together] since 2004, then we started touring in 2006. Our first tour was from Nashville to Los Angeles, it was a dumb, dumb idea. Just straight from Nashville let's not do any cities in between, let's paint our faces and just start driving to L.A., smart. And our bus blew up on the way.

Ten Bands that We Were "Thinking" About For the Big Ass Show Richie T |

Ten Bands that We Were

Now that we have announced the lineup for the X96 Toyota Big Ass Show. Here are some artists that we “thought” about inviting but, unfortunately, just couldn’t make it.

1. Nickelback One of our employees suggested Nickelback… we had to let him go. 2. Creed *See Nickelback* 3. Daughtry Let’s be honest with one another here, you would only show up to sing that one song about coming home. Aren’t people over American Idol artists? 4. Anberlin The boys of Anberlin are currently heading overseas to say goodbye to their Australian, European, and other friends across the globe before heading back to the states for one last time. The thought of saying goodbye to one of their favorite cities earlier than intended was too much for them. Instead, they’re sticking us on the end of their final tour. Expect to see them October 17 at The Complex. 5. U2 Bono, The Edge, and the other guys were too busy writing new music, writing other superhero musicals and saving the world. They couldn’t be bothered to make an impromptu stop in Utah. 6. Taking Back Sunday They just played two soldout back-to-back shows with The Used three months ago! What more do you want from these guys? 7. Foo Fighters Dave Grohl has been way too busy with his new HBO series Sonic Highways and working on a new album for the Foo Fighters. He’s also been seen swimming with the otters, so the man has a lot on his plate.

Dave Grohl finds peace among these furry aquatic animals.

8. Red Hot Chili Peppers The chili peppers are locked away in their studio working on new music and doing who knows what else. Unknown sources have told us that they won’t make contact with anyone, except the pizza man, until the new album is complete. 9. Blur But only on the condition that they would play Song 2 in loop. They wouldn’t go for it. 10. Kid Rock?

If you missed it, here is the BASH lineup: A Day To Remember, Neon Trees, Phantogram, Capital Cities, Broods, Nightmare and The Cat, and Priory. There are more artists that will be added to the lineup within the next couple weeks!

Tim Kazurinsky on Radio From Hell Richie T |

Tim Kazurinsky on Radio From Hell

For personal reasons I loved having Tim Kazurinsky on the show today. He’s currently playing the Wizard in Wicked. (Click Here for Tickets) He’s known for a lot of TV shows and movies, but it was amazing to talk to him about one of my comedic heroes, John Belushi. Tim and John were very close for a number of years. Tim shared stories about Belushi that were personal and gave me insight to a side of him that was not widely known. Belushi hated being stereotyped as Bluto from Animal House. He tried different types of characters (Continental Divide, Neighbors) and did them well, but the public wanted him to be loud and smash beer cans on his forehead. And he validated something I have thought for years. The soundtrack for Neighbors totally ruined the movie. I thought I was the only one who felt this way.

My job is pretty cool sometimes.

Primus sucks! and they have new album! jon | Mid Day

Primus sucks! and they have new album!

Primus is back together and bringing us more of that "is that funny?" style of wackiness! I know we've seen Les Claypool doing his side projects in recent years and I think there was even a Primus album or two that we all ignored in there somewhere. But THIS time it's the original lineup! The Primus we all know and love has not been in studio together since 1995. That's when I bought tales from the punch bowl at Fred Meyer in Taylorsville. Ok, my Mom bought it for me. :)

Then she and my Dad made this face while listening to it on the drive home.

It turns out that Les was a big fan of the 1970's version of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory", (Who wasn't?) so Claypool, along Larry LaLonde, and Tim Alexander have announced plans to pay tribute to with an album called "Primus and the Chocolate Factory with the Fungi Ensemble." Claypool tells "Rolling Stone" he was obsessed with the film as a kid, explaining that for a few years in the early '70s "it was everything Wonka." "Primus and the Chocolate Factory" is due out October 21st. Primus also plans to keep with the "Willy Wonka" tradition by putting five golden tickets in random copies of the special chocolate-colored vinyl edition of the new record.

Drummer Tim Alexander is also currently recovering after suffering a heart attack and undergoing open-heart surgery earlier this month, but he's expected to be back to his usual self in time for Primus to bring the "Chocolate Factory" album on the road starting October 22nd.Right now it doesnt look like there are any plans to stop through Utah.

Primus sucks!

Duran Duran still has a fan club! Which they are suing. jon | Mid Day
07/28/2014 | Filed In: Duran Duran | x96 | Jon Smith | girls on film | her name is Rio | she dances on the sand

Duran Duran still has a fan club! Which they are suing.

Word has been spreading about Duran Duran suing their fan club.  I don't know what I'm more suprised about.  The fact that Duran Duran still has a fan club, or how they still have time to sue their fan club.  What with all the time they spend hanging out on Todd Nuke 'Em's iPod.

But yeah, Duran Duran has officially taken issue with their fan club, and are heading to court.  Please, God.  Let this one end up on Judge Joe Brown.

I ASK YOU FOR SO LITTLE

But Todd (and other fans) can rest easy. Duran Duran is reassuring their audience that their lawsuit isn't aimed at them. The band has posted a statement to their website saying they "value and respect their many fans around the world."   The group explains that the lawsuit is to protect their rights against the company that had been hired to manage their fan club --- not the fans themselves. Duran Duran adds that they're no longer working with WorldWide Fan Club Inc, but has "brought their official fan community in-house." They add that they will "continue to make every effort to provide the highest level of service" to their followers.  Which makes me ask the question:

What the HELL does a Duran Duran fan club do?

I mean, there were only so many Duran Duran songs, and the true fans already have them.  How many times can you hear about Rio dancing in the sand before you move on to some Midnight Oil or Information Society.

Bet you didn't know that song was about a camel.

In an Ordinary World, this would be handled in a friendly manner.  But This is Planet Earth, and they are Notorious for being Wild Boys.  Perhaps it was a Reflex, but Duran Duran got Hungry Like The Wolf and filed a breach of contract suit against WorldWide in a Chicago area court last Friday. However, many headlines in the U.S. and Britain this week stated that the group was suing their "own fan club."  Which is a Big Thing   ...Girls On Film..  I could't figure out a way to work that one in, but I like that song.
