I've just always loved the name. And I also wanted to be mercifully short with his first name because of his lifelong last name. It's relatively complicated, so we wanted a short, short and succinct first name and then he got my [name] as a middle name "Edward", so he's Paul Edward Kowalczyk.
My great grandparents came over. I'm solidly USA because it's been four or five generations of Kowalczyk's.
Playing Acoustic Shows:
It's fun, man. This time in my life, this whole solo chapter I started about four years ago... I'm doing a lot of my shows acoustic now with my bass player... I do about 60 percent of my shows like that.
What Happened with "Live"?
We'd been a band for a really long time. Four years ago I came to this sort of end-of-chapter moment in my life. I was loosing interest, loosing the passion for it and I realized that, hey, I've been doing it the same way for so long. What would happen if I picked up and grabbed an acoustic guitar and played solo shows? What if I just really went back to the core of what I do as a song writer? As soon as I started thinking that way... I just had this full-blown renaissance of interest in what I was doing again.
Birthday Dinner with the Family:
That's an extravaganza right there because you've got a two year old, an 11 and a 9 year old rocking it. Great Mama was pregnant at the time... You know, keeping the plates spinning.
You know, I came from a somewhat musical family, music lovers, but not a lot of performers or anything. I had an aunt who gave me some vocal lessons. She's a great singer, when I was younger. And I just fell in love with rock and roll... I've always just loved to sing.
Small Town Life:
It's very refreshing to come home to a small town, especially with being a performer. You go out and you're surrounded by hundreds, if not thousands, of people. And then to come back and sort of decompress in a way that is the total opposite of that energy is really important to me. It's something that I've always cherished.
